Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Clayton studied physics and mathematics at the University of Cincinnati before moving to New York City to complete a PhD in theoretical physics at New York University. There, he focused on localization and thermalization in closed, disordered quantum systems, developing and applying a range of numerical simulation techniques along the way. Toward the end of his PhD, he grew increasingly interested in collective and self-organizing behavior in open quantum systems driven far from equilibrium. That interest brought him to Columbia University, where he is now a postdoctoral researcher. When not doing physics, he enjoys composing, playing, and listening to music.
